Journal of Migraine Sufferers

I was so happy to find this sight today while searching for drug info. My DO put me on Imitrex nasal spray because I vomit so much with my migraines that I rarely keep anything else down. I've tried Inderol and other beta blockers but they don't prevent the migraines. I have had much relief with the spray - except for the taste, all I need to do is sleep for at least an hour and when I wake up, it's gone! I feel like this is a miracle drug!! What does concern me is the rebounds the next day, because then I need to take more! My new neurologist wants me to take Elavil daily and then Fiornal when I get a migraine and Vicodin if that doesn't work. I'm concerned about the Elevil making me feel drugged and sleepy so I haven't filled the prescription. I was taking 60 mg of Prozac a day for depression last year, and although I wasn't depressed anymore, all I wanted to do was sleep. I work 60 hours a week now as a children's librarian between two libraries and I simply can't be sleepy all the time! If anyone has thoughts or advice, I'm all ears. Thanks for giving me this forum - it's nice to not feel alone in this pain!

I just went to the doctors about another health condition, and am I ever concerned. He is switching meds for a skin disoder that I have. It is to help the burning and itching that I get. I am currently on neurontin as a preventative for migraines, which he knows about, and on other meds for skin disorder, and now he is putting me on doxepin, an antidepressant that is also helpful for skin conditions. I'm nervous because one of the side affects are headaches. The last time I was put on medication for the skin, it caused my migraines to go haywire. I had 8 bad ones in a month, each one lasting for days at a time. I was either going into, dealing with, or coming out of a migraine. I hate to not try this, because my skin disorder is uncomfortable, and aggrevating, and has caused me hassles because it is very unsightly when it acts up. So I have to try, but I sure am scared. I know stressing myself out because of this is'nt going to help either. Say a prayer, my migraine family. I'm hoping for the best.

To Elizabeth from San Francisco: Sorry, I missed your latest entry. I see you have already begun to get off the analgesics. Good Luck ... Ray.

To Elizabeth from San Francisco: Your E-Mail address seems to be incomplete. I suffered from daily rebound headaches until May of 1998. I was taking Imitrex and Fioricet twice a day. These were effective in relieving the pain, but caused the daily headaches every morning. The analgesics may help your pain, but will cause a viscous cycle; pain, medicine, relief, pain, etc.. You have to get help to get off the analgesics. I went to the New England Headache Center in Connecticut. They started me on a decreasing dosage of Prednisone and an increasing dosage of Elavil. These really helped during the transition period. It can take 3 to 6 weeks to stop the daily rebound headaches, but they will stop. Your intermittent migraines will probably still come, but you should have better control over them. After you stop the analgesics, the preventative medicines will be able to work much better. Ask you doctor about using Prednisone or something else, and stop the analgesics. Sometimes it is necessary to go into the hospital for 5-7 days of intravenous DHE-45 treatments to speed up this process. That's the route I took. If you need any other information, please let me know. Good Luck, things will get better ... Ray.

After spending years messing around with Neurologists and Internal Med physicians..I am now in a Pain Managment Clinic. The staff is very respectful of me and my headaches. When I first went to the clinic I had a headache for about a month. To break the cycle I was started on 70mg of Pr4ednisone...which was quickly tapered. It ended the headache and now we are working on preventative meds. I did not have any side effects from the Prednisone....because I was on it for a short time. Elizabeth EWhit1751 San Francisco
