Journal of Migraine Sufferers

Like everyone else I too suffer from migraines. My question for you or anyone who may have an answer is in the last 3 weeks I have been unable to get rid of my migraine. It comes and goes, but most days are spent with an icepack on my head, and my face in the tolit bowl. Not exactly how I wish to spent my days. I am on Imitrix, and also take tylenol #3, am in excellant shape, know what food, additives, etc I must avoid, and always stay within restricted diet. The only thing different I have done is I went to a chiropractor for the first time. I injured my shoulder last march Ice Climbing and my physio therapist recommended I give him a try to see if could not help me, as both my orthopidic doctor and physio therapist are stumped at to why my shoulder is not recovering. I saw the chiropractor for one week, always leaving with a headache, he said it was just from the adjustments he made and when go away with in a few hours. The headaches always did subside after a few hours, but would not go away completely. I have not gone back to him, my question is: Should I return, or will I cause myself more grief.

Hi,

I have just started getting migraines and I am wondering if ice and pressure would alieviate the pain. Several different times I have had them and they occur in different spots. I was wondering where others get migraines on their heads; around their eyes, neck, along jaw lines...?

If anyone has any information regarding this it would be greatly appreciated. Please email brina@csd.sgi.com

My wife has been taking Imitrex in the pill form for maybe 6 months. We are self employed so we pay a substantial amount for the pills. Roughly $10/pill. Anyway we recently learned that if she gets the pill in 50 mg. it costs about half as much per mg. as the 25's she was using before. I don't know who should have told us about this the doctor or the pharmacist but neither did. The pharmacist stands to make a lot more money so I guess they wouldn't. The doctor probably just goes along with what the drug co. susggests. Is it any wonder we don't trust the medical community. Please pass this on.

---Robert Legge Etlan, VA Family: my mother started suffering from migraines about 7 years ago. Her father had them regularly until he was completely debilitated by a series of strokes. Since men were not really recognized to have migraines back in the 50's, when his started in earnest, he was sure he had a brain tumor, and no one really understood.

It is now 24 hours after last night's onset, and as of an hour ago, I feel fine. Earlier today, in the late morning, I had a very hard time reading --- somehow, my eyes just didn't focus on the print very well.

Since the pain was only a soreness, I didn't take anything for it. Sleep is my favorite drug :-)...

I have thought hard about what was different; what may have triggered it? Meals were as usual. I had just finished my period. I had even kept my usual sleep schedule on this trip (Halifax is 2 hours ahead of Chicago). I have been under much more stress at various times over the past 20 years than I am under now (last year, I was worried about getting journal papers published. A few years ago, I wrote and defended my dissertation and looked for a post-doc...). My biggest stress is to keep finding continued funding to do my research --- but that has been true for 4 years now.

So why a migraine now?

What I did notice was that I was hypersensitive to smells of secondhand-smoke yesterday morning, and breakfast did not taste quite as good as the morning before...

Finally, having observed my problems with reading today, my awareness of light after the aura subsided, and the general soreness in my head, I am pretty sure that I have had similar --- but MUCH, MUCH milder --- episodes over the past couple of years. In retrospect, I now recognize that there were days when I felt "out of sorts" and had difficulty reading printed material in very much the same way as I felt today.

If I'm lucky, it will be another 20 years before this happens again... Even so, I'll keep reading this page --- I bet there are a lot more suffering people out there than the medical world has previously realized.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Web Page. I am new to the web, and this has really helped me out.I have been suffering from migranes for 7 years. It all started when I had two brains surgeries done. One for Arnold Chiara and the other I had to have a ventricular shunt put in. Shortly after the surgeries, the migranes started. I had been the route with Neurosurgeons, and they refered me on to a Neurologist. I have had very good luck with diagnoses and treatment of migranes. I am 40 years old and have daily migranes without prevention. I am currently taking atenenol and depakote at night. Both make me very tired. I just started the depakote this week. I had previously been taking 60 mg. Paxil and 1 mg. of klonopin. Those quit working and the prior was prescribed. I take Vicodin when I have a migrane.

It seems like I take more meds than my grandmother. I am frustrated, and the new meds haven't kicked in yet. In fact looking at this monitor gives me a head ache. Again thanks for the time and effort that has gone into helping.

PATIENT: Doctor, Doctor, it hurts when I do this. DOCTOR: Well, donšt stop doing it, but take this pill, too. : (

The migraine sufferer in our family was helped by totally eliminating MSG (monosodium glutamate) and aspartame (Nutrasweet) from her diet. (Harder than it sounds--the amount of MSG in the U.S. food supply has doubled every decade since 1950.) We hope our story will help others.

Our daughter (now 13) began complaining of a headache at age 6, which became a non-stop, 7-year migraine. Two years ago, we began removing MSG from her diet. Positive results spurred us on and we started researching hidden sources of MSG. On a STRICT no-MSG diet, she only has a headache after accidental contact (mostly with soaps).

Our daughter experienced headache, dizziness, flushing, tightness in the chest, facial pressure, tingling in the neck and arms, nausea, depression, mental confusion, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. MSG can mimic the symptoms of almost anything (including migraine) from depression to arthritis, from asthma to heart attack, from skin rash to bed wetting. The more MSG you consume, the sicker you get. (see http://www.tiac.net/users/mgold/msg/msg.html --very informative!!!)

Please e-mail us if you would like more info: morrison@bbs.marshallnet.com Herešs the list of ingredients we avoid that always (CAPS) or often contain MSG.
